The school inaugurated in 1890 as St Pauls Vidyalaya and re-named in 1958 as C/Rathnawali Balika Maha Vidyalaya. In the same year the school developed into a secondary school and finally to a popular leading school in Borella Division.
Today Rathnawali Balika Maha Vidyalaya stands to be one of the popular Buddhist schools in Colombo. At present the school shelters over 2000 students enjoying educational facilities guided by a staff of about 100 teachers devoted to the task of providing knowledge and skills and assisting the pupils with the aim of character building and good citizenship.
Over the years, Rathnawali has been producing physically and mentally well-being citizens and contributed immensely to the upliftment of the Nation.
